Martinware Collection, Southall Library

GuM were appointed by the L.B. of Ealing to design and project manage the new Martinware Collection which is be located in a new gallery in The Dominion Centre, Southall. The gallery opened in summer 2014.

Our work included the assessment of the collection of Martinware – stoneware pottery designed by the four Martin Brothers, who lived and worked in Southall, between the 1870s and 1920s, the creation of a new digital catalogue, procurement of specialist conservators, and the packing and installation of the objects, the development of the interpretation, the design of the gallery, including showcases, and the graphic design including thematic texts, and artefact labels. We have also advised on floor finish, colour and lighting.

We designed all the object layouts for the showcases and advised on handling objects, for example facsimile sketch books, reference books relating to contemporary artists and re-print newspapers. Our role also extended to research
and scriptwriting and procuring “then and now” photographs of Southall.
